43 arrested in Woodbridge gambling raid

At least 43 people face charges after police busted an illegal gambling ring at a Woodbridge pool hall Wednesday.

After a year-long investigation, an OPP-led illegal gaming task force executed a search warrant at Lethal Q Billiards and Café on Hwy. 7, seizing $12,250 in cash and $9,000 in gambling equipment, said OPP Det. Sgt. Paul Chafe.

"That's a fair bit of money...the place was full and they had four tables going," Chafe said.

The Texas Hold'em tables were "in a wide open space... they had billiards at one end and the tables set up at the other," Chafe said, adding that the operators were holding tournaments as well.

The bar has been shut down and two men face charges for operating the illegal gambling operation.

Arash Azadpeyma, 32, of Thornhill and Carmine Sorella, 40, of Newmarket are charged with keeping a common gaming house.

The other 41 people were arrested and charged with being found in the illegal gaming house.

All 43 people are scheduled to appear in court in Newmarket on Dec. 3.

In an unrelated series of raids, the OPP task force arrested four people for keeping illegal video gaming machines at three Toronto businesses and a Maple home yesterday. The accused will appear in court in Newmarket on Dec. 3.

Officers seized $8,630 in currency and $10,000 in gambling equipment at those locations.
