University research shows decline in college gambling on the Internet

College student gambling over the Internet, especially in the poker sector, has been a platform for the industry's detractors in the past, but recent research at the Annenberg Public Policy Centre at the University of Pennsylvania may be about to take at least some of the wind out of their sails.

The researchers report that online gambling among college students is on a downward trend and has been declining since the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act became law last year, disrupting financial transactions between American players and online gambling companies.

The decline over the past year has been measured at 3.8 percent - from 5.8 percent to just below 2 percent, according to the Centre.

Dan Romer, associate director of Annenberg Public Policy Centre, said banks and law enforcement are working together to set up online roadblocks for young people.

“You can’t just get on and give a credit card anymore," he told the anti-online gambling publication Family News in Focus. "So that’s probably slowed down the enthusiasm on the part of some young people.”
